Premier inspects irregularly low Mekong River
(KPL) Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh and his delegates earlier this week monitored the unusual drought environment of the Mekong River, which badly affected the irrigation system feeding dry season rice production and the production of water supply in Vientiane Capital. The water level of Mekong River was worsened when compared it to the same previous year.

EU holds drawing competition
(KPL) The Delegation of the European Union in Laos has launched a drawing contest on Gender Equality for Lao students aged from 8-10 years olds under the theme “Once upon a time, there was a girl and a boy; together they wanted to make the world a better place.” According to a press conference held yesterday at the Lao Journalists’ Association, the main objective of the drawing competition is to promote gender equality among young people.

Improvement of three airports in the North planned
(KPL) The government of the Lao PDR is now making the feasibility study to construct and improve the airport in the three northern provinces of Houaphan, Xiengkhouang and Bokeo. The project aimed to upgrade capacity and improve the services system in order to receive the landing and taking off of the big plane and to promote the tourism industry in the said province.

Proposal to make Bueng That Luang a natural and cultural heritage park
Amid Vientiane Capital City making preparations to celebrate its 450th birthday at the end of 2010, the Ministry of Information and Culture and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) called attention to the cultural, historical, economical, ecological, and social importance of the Bueng That Luang wetland through the proposal of an alternative development plan.

Vice Prime Minister pays working visit to Bokeo
(KPL) Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad paid a working visit to Bokeo province, specifically to inspect ongoing construction projects. Pakse Airport to reopen in two months
(KPL) Champassak re-improves its Pakse airport and hopes it will be ready for use in May, according to an official. Head of the Civil Aviation Department, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Yakoua Lorpangkao, said that the improvement of Pakse Airport began in March 2008 and would take 20 months.

Private investment in mother-and-child healthcare service
(KPL) The Sengphachanh Company Limited has invested 32.6 billion kip (USD3.8 million) in developing a mother-and-child hospital in Vientiane Capital. The construction of the five-storey 120-bed building is being carried out in Viengchaleun village, Saysettha district. The multibillion-kip construction project is scheduled to be over in 2012.

Deputy Culture Minister goes to Bokeo to develop tourist attractions
(KPL) Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Mr. Boua-ngeun Saphouvong and his delegation paid a working visit to Bokeo province last week. 30th anniversary of Lao women’s newspaper marked
(KPL) The Lao Women’s Union on Tuesday marked the 30th founding anniversary of the Lao women’s newspaper. The Lao women’s newspaper is a voice of Lao women and a representative of the Lao Women’s Union, which was established on 8 March 1980s with the aim of disseminating the Party’s policy, socio-economic development plan of the state, the resolution of Lao women and promotion of fine traditional culture of the nation.

Vietnam continues to invest in Laos
(KPL) Vietnam will continue to pour investment into Laos, President of the Business and Investment Cooperation Association Hoang Cung Thien Nhan has said. Speaking at the sixth Lao Business Forum (LBF), which was held recently in Vientiane, Nhan also called on the Lao government to create favourable conditions for the development of cross-border trade and the building of border economic zones.

(KPL) Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, on 10 March, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in technological management from Thailand’s, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University. The ceremony took place in the conference hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Vientiane. It was attended by senior government officials and university rectors from Laos and Thailand. Mr Bouasone thanked representatives from the university after receiving the honorary degree and said it was an indication of the growing cooperative relationship between Laos and Thailand.
