Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy hydropower plant approved

(KPL) The government has given green lights to the Republic of Korea and Thai investors to resume their development activities on the Xe Pian and Xe Namnoy hydropower plant in Champassak province.
The SK Engineering and Construction Co., the Korea Western Power Co., and the Ratchabori Electricity Generation Holdings Co., (Thailand) signed an agreement on the resumption of their activities last week with the Ministry of Planing and Investment.
According to the agreement, the companies will spend 18 months for designing the plants and studying the effects of the project to the environment and communities.
The plant will have power generation capacity of 390 MW. The power generated from the plant in the next four years will be exported to Thailand like Nam Ngum 2, Namngiap 1, Namtheun 1, Teunhinboun, Theunkhayai and Hongsa
Lignite Powerhouse.
Early this year, Champassak held a seminar on the possible effects of the Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy Hydropower plant to the environment and communities in the province.
Two neighbouring countries Vietnam and Thailand are the very large power consumers of Laos. Their power demand is increasing.
