Govt urges donors to consider priority projects of Laos
(KPL) Prime Minister Mr. Bouasone Bouphavanh urged international donors who gathered at the at the Rountable Meeting in Vientiane this week to consider its policies on rural development, job creation, education development, health, food and nutrition security and human resource development. He also referred to other policies, such as good governance, gender role promotion, participation of the private sector in national development and integration, national economic growth and stabilisation of macro-economy of the country just in case the country is deeply affected by the ongoing world financial crisis. The Prime Minister highlighted to the participants the successful national socio-economic development in the past year and said the national gross domestic product (GDP) in the 2007-2008 fiscal year was 7.9 per cent and the inflation rate of the same period was 8 per cent. Such a rate of growth, he added was achieved in spite of high oil prices, the damage by flood water to crops and high prices of food and other commodities. The aims of this year’s meeting, held on an annual basis, are to review the resolutions of the last national round table meeting in 2007, the implementation of national socio-economic plan and national budget plan of the government for the last fiscal year 2007-2008, the strategies of government sectors and developmental directions and working towards international and regional integration. Present at the meeting were the Minister of Planning and Investment, Soulivong Dalavong, United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Ajay Chhibber, diplomatic officials, representatives of non-governmental organisations and representatives from relevant sectors.
