In-depth cooperation ties between Laos, Myanmar
(KPL) The diplomatic relations between Laos and Myanmar over the past 55 years have yielded profound cooperation, said Myanmar Ambassador to Laos, Mr U Nyunth Laing.
This was the Ambassador’s statement made at a lecture on the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Lao PDR and Myanmar (12 July 1955-12 July 2010), held at the Institute of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, on 22 July.
More than 80 officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, External Relations Commission of the Party Central Committee and relevant authorities have attended the function aiming at providing knowledge on the diplomatic relations between the two countries and other areas, especially national defence and development and mutual help.
Ambassador of Myanmar to the Lao PDR, Mr Laing, said that “we have signed many agreements in the past 55 years, ranging from an agreement to demarcate the Mekong river boundary between our two countries to an agreement on setting up ties of twin towns between Bagan of Myanmar and Luang Prabang of Laos.”
“We have signed agreements on border affairs, trade, the avoidance of double taxation, and tourism, to mention a few. These agreements show the depth of cooperation between our two countries in the political, economic, and social and culture spheres,” he said.
Mr Laing continued that the Lao government was one of the first governments in the world to express concern over the tragedy suffered by Myanmar, and was also one of the countries in the world to offer direct and concrete assistance to her.
In addition, the Lao PDR also donated US$120,000 in direct financial aid, various types of goods and foodstuffs, and relief aids to the victims of terrible cyclone.
In 2008, Myanmar donated 200 tonnes of salt as well as the US$8,000 cost of transporting it to the flood affected regions of Laos.
In the same year, Myanmar also donated US$50,000 as aid to the Lao PDR suffering from flood, and in 2009 also donated US$30,000 as assistance to the neighbour for the devastation caused by Ketsana tropical storm.
