Smuggling and crime conference held

(KPL) Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Crime organized a meeting on smuggling and crime on 18-21 November in Vientiane.
Mr Alounkeo Kittekhoun, an Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Leik Boonwaat, country representative of UNODC in Laos, representatives from line ministries, international organizations and 300 participants attended at the meeting.
A four day conference features local and international speakers on topics associated with transnational organized crime, including drug trafficking, smuggling of migrants, environmental crime, corruption and money laundry.
The meeting was aimed at providing understanding to participants regarding to smuggling, crime and risky damage development which was negative impact to the society and a great challenge. Mr Alounkeo said that the Lao government has so far paid attention to address and crack down drug trafficking and anti-criminal issues.
Lao government has proclaimed various laws to control and suppress such as the criminal and civil laws including law on people’s supreme court, law on Public Prosecutors General Office, law on anti corruption, law on drug, and the Prime Minister’s decree on preventing money laundry.
Lao PDR became a member of International Conventions such as the UN Convention on transnational crime and three sub-conventions on anti-drug.
Laos has signed the UN convention on anti-corruption, and becoming as a member of UN treaties on combating terrorism September 2008 and a treaty of ASEAN on mutual assistance.
