Sekong’s effort for educational development in rural areas

(KPL) Southernmost province of Sekong is facing shortage of teachers and the number of student is now declining worriedly, said Deputy Governor of Sekong province, Mr Phonephet Khiuylavong.

The statement was released at the provincial meeting of educational administrator in Sekong province, last week.

He said that more than 86 percent of children aged between 3 and 5 are not attending school, while students aged between 15 and 35 are low education standard.

The studying and teaching curriculums between urban and rural areas are likely to be big gaps, Mr Phonephet said.

Many children do not care about studying and the community does not participate to promote the education, he continued.

The rate of class repetition entire the province estimated 27.6 percent of primary school and the year one students in rural and remote schools accounted for 47 percent, he said.

The shortage of teachers is a major problem for the province,” he said. “Although we had a quota for teacher, there is nobody to volunteer to be there”.

Another existing problem is also the main cause, leading the educational system in Sekong province to low quality over the past five years, claimed Deputy Governor Phonephet.

During the meeting, the education administrators have discussed plans to solve this problem and ready to expand the kindergarten in rural areas.

Deputy Governor said that the kindergarten needs to be expanded because the enrolment rate of 3-5 years old children remains low and seems to be lower in near future. The expansion of kindergarten is a priority of the province, he said.

He added that it was one of Sekong’s education development plan in the next five years (2011-2015) and one of four major projects of Education Ministry.
