Louang Namtha to have 90 per cent of school-aged access primary education

(KPL) A northern province of Louang Namtha plans to have 90 per cent of school-aged children enrolled in primary schools, according to Deputy Director of the provincial Education Service, Mr Sompheng Ratsavong.

He said that the 2010-2011 academic plant indicated the province must have the enrolment rate for lower secondary schools standing at 67% and that for upper secondary schools to be 40%.

The literate rate of people aged over 15 must stand at 73%, according to the plan. Educational executives in Louang Namtha province last Wednesday held a meeting on the implementation of 2009-2010 academic year plan.

The meeting was presided over by Head of the Education Service of Louang Namtha province, Mr. Sorphith Sithbounlang. Minister of Education, Dr. Phankham Philavanh, and relevant officials from five districts in the province were also present at the event.

The participants discussed the contribution of non-formal education to the illiteracy eradication in the province, the vocational training of ethnic people and the assisting of the Lao cultural groups in accessing education.

The establishment of model secondary schools, vocational education and high education, human resource development, the reforming of curriculum of upper secondary school (matthayom 4-7) and the solution to teacher shortage in mountainous areas were also discussed at the meeting.
