Customs officers detain smuggled cars

(KPL) A case of illegal vehicle importers is under the trail of Vientiane Prosecutor’s Office after arresting by the customs officers of Division of Tax Control and Prevention at the 1st Friendship Bridge, last two week.

Head of Tax Control and Prevention Division, Mr Khammit Sayasa said that the suspects were arrested at the 1st Friendship Bridge after trying to smuggle five cars with Thai license plates from Thailand to Laos.

The number of smuggled vehicle into the country has a trend to increase over the first six month of the year, he said.

“We would loss more than 300 million kip of income if the five illegal cars were avoidable our inspection,” he said.

There are 1,600 cases of illegal vehicle import, 44 of them have been resolved over the first six months of this year.

The illegal trade of cars with fake licenses also increased over the past months despite the warning from the Customs Department of Ministry of Finance.

There are about 80 cases of illegal trade of cars with counterfeit licenses nationwide, 50 cases of which were arrested and the rest is under the hunting, according to the police officers concerned, said Mr Khammit.

He has called on all vehicle buyers and sellers to pay attention and to be careful about the fake licenses before making a decision to buy car in order to avoid taking advantage.
