Unitel gives free internet use to over thousand schools

(KPL) The Star Telecom Company’s Unitel Communications Network has agreed to grant the installation of internet to more than 1,000 schools countrywide.

A signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Star Telecom Company’s Unitel Communications Network, at the Ministry of Education, on 14 July.

The signatories to the MoU were Mr. Sengsomphone Vilavuth, Director of Planning and Cooperation Department of Ministry of Education and Mr. Kongphet Yongvongsitthi, Deputy Director of Star Telecom Company’s Unitel Communications Network in the witnesses of both side staff concerned.

The Lao Star Telecom is a company to provide free internet use to poor schools as a contribution to the Government’s policy on human resource development. This aims to give an educational opportunity to Lao student access to internet use or Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The School Internet Network System Expansion Project of Unitel, worth of USD 3 million, will install internet in 1,290 schools for five years (2010-2015) countrywide. The project will initially install in the lower and upper secondary schools before expanding to the primary schools.
