Mongchao declared as slash-and-burn cultivation free village

(KPL) Mongchao village, Phongsaly district of the same name province, has been declared as the first slash-and-burn cultivation free village of the province.

A ceremony to announce the village achievement in stopping the slash-and-burn cultivation practice was held on Tuesday, July 13, with the participation of Prime Minister, Mr. Bouasone Bouphavanh, and authorities and people in the province.

At present, 92 families or 83 per cent of the villagers do fixed farming. Most grown crops are tea planted on 121 ha. The per capita income of the villager is over two million kip (USD243), according to the Agriculture and Forestry Service of Phongsaly.

The provincial service said that since 1996 the province had made an effort in stopping the practice of slash-and-burn cultivation and this was in line with the government policy on stopping the slash-and-burn cultivation practice.

The allocation of residential and farming land is part of the province’ effort in stopping the slash-and-burn cultivation practice in the province.

On the same day, Prime Minister visited the Provincial Administration Office, tea factories and one of them was Phoufa Tea Factory which annually exports 60 tonnes of tea to China. The factory was built two years ago.

The prime minister was also informed about the transfer of administrative offices from Phongsaly district to Bounneua district of which the landscape is relatively flat. It is said that the transfer will be over in 2020 with an investment of 15 trillion kip.
