Japan NGO grants primary school construction in Laos

(KPL) The Commission for Solidarity with the Asian Underprivileged (CSA) of Japan has granted US$117,600 to the Ministry of Education for the construction of two primary schools in Meuangva and Namai villages, Paklai district, Sayaboury province.

A signing ceremony of the assistance took place at the Ministry of Education last Friday.

The signatories to the document were the CSA Secretary General, Mr. Haruhiko Nagaishi, the Director General of the Primary and Pre-School Education Department, Mr. Chaleun Souvong, and the Director of the Inthon Construction Company, Mr. Chanphouviengchit Phengsavang.

The construction of the two new primary schools will start this month and will take one year, confirmed the contractor, Inthon Construction Company.

The construction works on the two schools include an office, a library and toilets.

Mr. Chanphouviengchith said that all primary students in Paklai district would study in the new building in November this year. Each class room accommodates some 40 children.

Up to now, the CSA has granted the construction of 20 primary schools in Luang Prabang, Bokeo, Vientiane and Borikhamsay provinces, said Mr. Nagaishi.

Last month, the CSA just handed over Pha-oudom primary school in Pha-oudom district, Bokeo province, with worth US$58,797, to the local authorities, he added.

Mr. Chaleun said that this is the Ministry of Education’s goal to improve basic education in the Lao PDR, especially giving opportunities to poor students to have an access to education.

He also thanked the CSA for the generous assistance and hoped for further CSA’s aid in the future.
