Construction of railway avoided for warehouse

(KPL) The construction of a 9-km railway phase 2 connecting from Thanaleng Train station to Khamsavat village, Saysettha district, Vientiane Capital has been suspended thanks to the Government planned to build a large scale of warehouse instead.
The government’s plan for the construction of warehouse is to support the increased volume of goods.
After inaugurated for train service (phase 1), the government has a plan to construct a railway phase 2 of a 9-Km long from Thanaleng station to Khamsavat village.
The survey and design of railway phase 2 has finished in which the Thai government will initially invest about US$50 million.
Presently, the plan has been stopped for a while by Lao Government and changed the plan to construct a large scale of warehouse, Head of Train Administration Unity, Mr. Somsana Latsaphong explained.
Mr. Somsana added that the warehouse will be built on 400 rai that is not far from the Thanaleng Train Station, approximately 500 m, which spend the construction fund gaining from Thai government grant about 30% and the rest is loan.
Despite Laos and Thailand badly flood impact, it is seen the number of passengers using train service have moved forward, amounting to over 30,000 people compared to 2010 double. A large amount of customers were foreigners from Europe and while Lao people was only 10%.
This year is the Visit Laos Year, just a month the train provided service almost 3,000 passengers, approximately 70-100 daily.
Now, the train is available for service in two times per day, which departure at 9:30 am and arrive at 11:00 am and in the afternoon start at 14:45 pm. The fares are three categories available; 20 baht, 30 baht and 50 baht (Thai currency). The 20 baht is a popular among passengers, said Mr. Somsana.
